SHEARING

All alpacas at Windy Ridge are shorn once a year, usually in late May. Alapcas at Windy Ridge are completeley shorn, we do not recommend 'poodle' or 'lion' cuts, as these leave too much fibre on the animal during hot weather. We use a shearing table where the alpacas lay flat on the table. Both front and rear legs are held in restraints, we have a person holding the head and people on either end of the table in charge of the leg restraints. Besides the shearer we also have someone collecting the fibre as it comes off the animal and someone at the sorting table. While the alpaca is on the table we will trim the toes and give any needed vaccinations.
